REC Solar CEO: Solar Needs To Grow ‘9 Times Faster’ To Curb Climate Change

The CEO of REC Solar, one of Europe’s largest solar energy companies, has called for radically higher government renewable energy targets.

“The EU’s new target of 32 per cent renewables by 2030 is a really nice improvement, which requires a doubling of current solar implementation in Europe,” Steve O’Neil told Impact4All.

“But our research says it’s not enough to achieve climate change goals… we need to go further. To really achieve global warming goals, we believe [solar] installation rates have to grow nine times more than they are growing today.” O’Neil said.

Founded in 1996, REC Group is a vertically integrated solar energy company which produces wafers, cells and panels and extending to solar solutions. The company employs more than 2,000 people worldwide, producing 1.5 GW of solar panels annually.

REC Solar unveiled its latest module innovation, the N-peak series, in June this year at the InterSolar Europe trade show. The new solar PV modules are the first to combine n-type, mono-cSi and half-cut cell technologies.

The CEO said the N-peak panels had been four years in the making. “It’s been in the works for a very long time’,” he said. “The real trick in this industry is to be able to do mass production at very high quality.”

The module, according to REC Group, achieves an output of up to 330W, and with the twin panel design – effectively splitting the module into two parts – offers improved performance in shaded conditions.

O’Neil said: “Solar has now been around for 50 years, it’s highly reliable and we’d like to see a trend towards economic support for solar as opposed to policy support for solar. We’d like to see a move away from feed-in tariffs to auctions and self consumption.”
