Thousands of People Joined Forces To Help Clean Up the Rhine

The first international Rhine Clean Up was organised on Saturday 15 September to coincide with World Clean Up Day.

Over 6,000 volunteers came together in towns and cities along the length of the Rhine to remove mounting litter that infests the river.

Rhine Clean Up Day, a mega-scale cleaning campaign, is designed to create awareness of how much dirt people leave behind on the Rhine, Joachim Umbach, one of the initiators of the project told Frankfurter Rundschau.

Each year, the Rhine washes a million kilograms of rubbish into the North Sea.

This year, for the first time, the Rhine Clean Up took place in 50 cities along the river. There was four locations in Hesse and 16 in Rhineland-Palatinate.
