Jeremy Corbyn Promises ‘400,000’ New Green Jobs For UK

UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn will promise to ‘kickstart a green jobs revolution’ in his closing speech to his party’s conference today.

Corbyn will commit the Labour party to a target of 60 per cent of energy to come from low carbon or renewable sources by 2030 – it is currently about 30 per cent.

His promised revolution would create more than 400,000 green jobs, including 160,000 from the home insulation programme, he will tell delegates.

The moves imply the number of onshore windfarms could rise under Labour from 7,000 to 14,000 over 12 years, while the number of offshore turbines would leap to more than 12,000.

Labour’s plans also envisage solar panels fitted ‘on all viable UK roofs’ by 2030. Corbyn will tell delegates: “There is no bigger threat facing humanity than climate change. We must lead by example. Our energy plans would make Britain the only developed country outside Scandinavia to be on track to meet our climate change obligations.”

The move will be part of a “radical plan we need to rebuild and transform Britain”, the Labour leader will say.

Much of the money to pay for the policy will come from the public purse – such as the £12.8bn Labour says it will set aside for subsidies to insulate homes in Labour’s first term.

The party says this policy alone will create 160,000 new green jobs. There will also be subsidies for offshore and onshore wind and solar energy.

The private sector will be encouraged to invest in onshore wind through changes to planning guidance – and landlords will be forced to invest in retrofitting older properties.
